A Review of Fixed Bed Gasification Systems for Biomass CIGR Journal
Sangeeta Chopra; Anil K Jain.
The gasification of biomass into useful fuel enhances its potential as a renewable energy resource. The fixed bed gasification systems are classified as updraft, Imbert downdraft, throatless downdraft, crossdraft and two stage gasifiers. Updraft gasifiers are suitable for gasification of biomass containing high ash (up to 15 %) and high moisture content (up to 50 %) and generate producer gas having high tar content (50–100 g/Nm3). The high temperature (830 oC) air gasification of biomass in updraft gasifiers increase the lower calorific value of producer gas and reduce the tar content. The updraft gasifiers have been used for gasification of bark, wood blocks, chips and pellets, straw, maize cobs, refuse derived fuel (RDF), and waste pellets with air and...

A review on applications of greenhouse drying and its performance CIGR Journal
Sahdev, Ravinder Kumar; Kumar, Mahesh; Dhingra, Ashwani Kumar.
Limited sources and rising cost of fossil fuels has instigated researchers to look towards renewable energy resources.  Among renewable energy resources, solar energy is required to become indispensable in the future, as it is inexpensive, abundant, inexhaustible, environmental friendly and non-pollutant.  Most of the people living in developing countries are dependent on agriculture.  Agricultural products are dried to increase the storage life, minimize the packaging requirement and reduce the transportation weight.  Solar drying for drying agricultural products is being practiced since long back throughout the world.  Because of its drawbacks, advance technique, i.e. greenhouse drying, is being adopted for drying crops to reduce the drying time and...

A review Technological development in the grading of fruits and vegetables: A review CIGR Journal
Sharanagat, vijay Singh; Nema, Prabhat; Kheto, Ankan; Kumar, Prasanna.
Grading is an ancient technique used for selecting and separating quality-based desirable products to increase the overall profit. It also contributes in maintaining uniform quality throughout the supply chain. Fruits and vegetables form an important part of our meals but their quality varies with the production practices, geographical regions, and environmental conditions. Hence, the supply of uniform quality fruits and vegetables to the consumers can be assured only through grading. Different types of graders, i.e., belt grader, weight grader, roller grader, image-based grader, etc., have been developed with time. Many modern graders possess higher efficiency and are product specific. However, industries are still using the traditional grading system...

A Serial Domain Decomposition Method for Discrete Element Method Simulation of Soil–Wheel Interactions CIGR Journal
Hiroshi Nakashima; Kyoto University.
We applied a serial domain decomposition method (DDM) to our two-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) program and investigated the effectiveness of DDM in terms of computer hardware. The developed program could obtain sufficiently accurate results for wheel slip, traction, and gross traction, comparable to DEM without serial DDM. We also confirmed that the soil deformation field under the wheel for DEM with serial DDM was similar to that for DEM without DDM. Moreover, the increased sub-domain loop was effective in reducing computational time in the case of serial DDM. Since each sub-domain loop contains the time integration and coordinate update routine, further optimization of memory usage in our serial DDM may be possible, which would allow...

A strategy for workplace health promotion on German dairy farms CIGR Journal
Jakob, Martina Carola; Thinius, Maxi.
Studies across the globe have shown that at least 3 out of 5 milkers experience pain in the musculoskeletal system (MSS), mostly in the upper extremities (DOUPHRATE et al., 2014, JAKOB, 2011, KOLSTRUP, 2012, PINZKE, 2003, TUURE & ALASUUTARI, 2009, KAUKE et al., 2010, THINIUS, 2012). The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. It is well known that dairy farming, and milking in particular is coupled with several risk factors for developing musculoskeletal disorders (KOLSTRUP, 2012). Technical measures seem to be insufficient to avoid physical overload. Therefore a more comprehensive approach seems to be necessary. In this study, four...

Muritala, ADAM; Obayopo, Sirajdeen; Odediran, Sunday.
Post-harvest processing of plantain to improve the market value is today an important aspect of the product supply chain. This study investigated a forced convective biomass dryer for plantain processing. Numerical simulation and experimental analysis were used to evaluate the performance of the biomass dryer and to optimize the drying process of plantain chips. The heat flow patterns within the drying chamber at air velocity of 1.5 m/s, 2.5 m/s and 3.5 m/s were predicted numerically and validated experimentally. A 5kg of fresh plantain at initial moisture content of 60% dried to moisture content of 13% was used to examine the drying rate of the biomass dryer. The mean drying rate was 0.0140 kg/h while the open sun drying rate was 0.0035 kg/h, indicating...

A study of a shock-absorber for a front-end loader modified for agricultural purposes with an electrohydraulic directional valve CIGR Journal
Kim, Hak-Jin.
A front-end loader for agricultural purposes is the most commonly used implement for agri-tractors in Korea. As it is operated to raise, lower and carry various objects in a farming field, it introduces a large amount of stress to a tractor, causing vibrations and often lead to a mechanical breakdown. These high stresses are observed at the starting and ending points of operation, that is, the points at which the highest acceleration and deceleration occur. To reduce the sudden change of the speed, soft-start & end operation were tested with an electrohydraulic directional valve, which has a built-in ramp time spool control function. This valve was controlled by SAE-J1939 associated messages via CANBUS. This shock-absorbing system contains three ECUs...

B. S. Ogusina; Obafemi Awolowo University,; O. A. Koya; Obafemi Awolowo University,; O. O. Adeosun; Obafemi Awolowo University.
A simply designed machine for cracking dika nut was fabricated. The nut is fed by hand inbetween a toggle mechanism comprising of the slider and a fixed block. Fracture mechanism was based on the deformation characteristics of dried dika nut under uni-axial compression. When actuated, the slider compresses the nutshell to failure along its line of symmetry. The experimental machine gave 100% cracking efficiency but with 24% kernel breakage in cracking sun-dried dika nut at 6.6% moisture content (w.b). The machine provides a viable and effective technique for safe dika kernel extraction.

A Theoretical Approach for Determining Irregularities of the Bottom of the Tillage Layer Caused by Horizontal Axis Rotary Tillers CIGR Journal
Ahmed Celik; Ismail Ozturk; Thomas R. Way.
Horizontal axis rotary tillers produce irregularities in the tillage depth when they are inappropriately operated and constructed. In such cases, mixing and breaking of soil throughout the tillage layer is not uniform and some untilled ridges will remain at the bottom determining the effect of design and operational characteristics on the height of the resultant ridges at the bottom of the tillage layer. In this study, a method based on the derived geometrical relationships between the rotary tiller operational parameters was developed to determine heights of ridges occurring at the bottom of the tillage layer. The ridge heights can be calculated for various combinations of blade peripheral speed, forward travel speed, rotor radius, and the number of...

A Two Degree of Freedom Damped Fruit Tree Model CIGR Journal
Láng, Zoltán; Csorba, Lászó.
A simple two degree of freedom fruit tree model was built and some of its behaviour was compared with real cherry trees. The model represented from one hand the rooting system with a certain amount of soil and of the trunk, from the other hand the main branches and limb.  The calculated results for the model have shown good accordance with the test results of the measured real tree: in both cases two peaks in the amplitude and acceleration vs.  frequency diagrams were clearly recognizable. Using the equation of the model the effect of shaker parameters and shaking frequency can be studied, which enables more accurate design of the shaker machine.

Accident at work with fertilizer distributors in Austrian agriculture CIGR Journal
Kogler, Robert; Quendler, Elisabeth; Boxberger, Josef.
Accidents with fertilizer distributors at work happen in the Austrian agriculture every year.  In accordance with Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and the standards ISO 4254-1 and DIN EN 14017, fertilizer distributors undergo a risk assessment before construction and market entry to ensure their complying with these legal recommendations and to eliminate largely the risk of injury for the operators.  To determine the accident scenarios, causes, and technical solutions, a narrative analysis of 14 reports of accidents that led to moderate and serious injuries from 2008 to 2010 was done, eight victims interviewed, and seven accident machines and eight new ones, which were sold in 2013, evaluated according to applicable regulations.  Mostly farm managers were...

Accuracy and precision of phytonematode sampling plans CIGR Journal
Abd-Elgawad, Mahfouz Mohamed Mostafa.
Sampling accuracy and precision are basic to nematode research and rational management decision. Taylor's Power Law is used to determine sample size. The published power law parameters are used here differently to define levels of reliability associated with a fixed, cost-determined, sample size. Such levels may provide the decision-maker with more informative data on sampling methods and their reliabilities. Instead of solving for unknown sample number, the rearranged equation to solve for sampling accuracy permitted the use of exact Student’s t-values. The t-values for confidence limits and standard normal variate were used. Both statistical techniques resulted in identical confidence band, in terms of being below, at, or above the economic threshold...
